The Season Begins !!!
It is finally sinking in that my busy workshop season is about to begin. Like very soon. In six days, I will be on my way to Morocco for my first workshop of the year, with many more to follow. This year I will hardly hit the ground until I finally get some time off at the end of June.
I am always amazed at how much preparation goes into making these workshops successful and (hopefully) smooth: Finding locations, horses, and handlers that can be trusted and understand what is required… finding hotels to accommodate everyone… booking car rentals and transportation, organizing airfare, and getting everyone’s itineraries together so we can meet them on arrival… currency exchanges… equipment checks… finding out people’s special needs and desires… sending out handouts and photography info… setting up a private Facebook group so people can communicate… sending out email and phone lists… passport check, notifying credit card companies of travel plans… sending out final itineraries… payments sent to hotels and other vendors… and not to mention packing for a month away from home!
And this is just the beginning…
I am always curious how each new year is going to unfold, which workshops people sign up for, which ones might need to be cancelled or postponed, which ones fill up fast, and which ones lag behind the others. Some are always popular, some are new ventures, but every year is very different.
This year will be a return to Morocco, but with a completely new (and rather nomadic) itinerary, then on to 2 workshops in Portugal, one of the most popular destinations I have. Then to a new workshop in British Columbia, Canada at a guest ranch with 100 horses, then on to my annual Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary workshop for the 9th year in a row, then to Wyoming for another 2 weeks, back to back, at a small private ranch in the mountains that I have done for 5 years now.
In the fall, I am doing my classic southern France workshop (one of my favorites), and had plans for an exciting new workshop in Tunisia… But because of the political climate, many have backed away from that one… sadly… so it probably will not happen this year.
I recently sent out a survey asking people what they felt about an “alternate” location in September or October, and I got some very interesting results back!!
I offered the following alternate locations: Mallorca, Spain. Tuscany, Italy. The Morrocan Desert. And the Colorado Mountains.
The overwhelming favorite was Colorado, then Morocco, followed closely by Mallorca and Tuscany.
So it looks like I’ll proceed with a new Colorado workshop, either in October, or January/February 2017. Look for that on my website soon!!
As far as the rest, I think they will all have to wait until 2017.
I would love to hear everyone’s ideas. What would you like? Where would you love to go? The contenders for 2017 include:
• Portugal (definite)
• Return to Freedom Wild Horse sanctuary (definite)
• Southern Canada
• Wyoming (definite)
• India (The Marwari Horses)
• Santa Fe, NM
